New School Coming to New Albany, Ohio

A new school is about to be added to New Albany’s already stellar public school system.

Voters approved a New Albany schools tax recently that will help pay for a new school building.

During the recent election, 50.7 percent of voters approved the tax, the Franklin County Board of Elections reported.

It was a narrow victory: Evidently, the measure was passed with just 43 extra votes.

Still, it was a record turnout year for voters, with 575,000 ballots cast – which is roughly 71 percent of voters. Comparatively, the 2008 election saw 67 percent of voters participating.

Public Education in New Albany

During the November election, the New Albany schools request combined a $45 million bond issue with a 4.24 million operating levy.

The new school building will likely house grades two through eight.

It will cost taxpayers about $209 more a year per $100,000 home value. With that configuration, it will generate about $3.5 million a year.

The new school is a welcome addition to the New Albany school district. After all, the district is the fastest growing in Franklin County.

At one point, the district was 700 students over capacity.

With the new school, the district will be able to eliminate any mobile units that have been used for education.

It will also be able to provide better lunch schedules for students.

The $33.7 million new school is expected to break ground in summer 2013, with completion expected for the 2014-15 school year.

We’ll keep you posted as more information comes out about this new school!
